The United Arab Emirates is a Muslim country, however it is also home to numerous churches of other faiths. In fact, many people are surprised to discover that in early 2001, ground was broken in Dubai to accommodate the construction of several churches on a parcel of land in Jebel Ali.
The land was donated by the government of Dubai under the leadership of HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. Currently there are four Protestant congregations, a Roman Catholic church and a Greek Orthodox church on the site.
His Highness the late Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed al Maktoum, former Vice President and Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates donated land in 1966 to build Dubai’s first church and inaugurated St. Mary’s Catholic Church in April 1967. In November 1989, a newer complex that can accommodate more than 1700 worshipers was inaugurated on the same site.
